Parts Arrived!

July 19, 2014 at 6:52 pm

It’s been too long since my last post – the work involved in fundraising leaves little time!

However, since the last post, quite an amount of funds have been raised (post on that coming) and I’ve started buying parts.  Those that have arrived so far are the PEM cell, a needle valve for deuterium admittance and a Helium-3 tube!  All of these were bought from Ebay and the sellers have all been great to deal with so far.

I’ve also been in contact with a number of companies, one such company is Hivac Engineering, an English company which manufactures vacuum chambers.  The guys there have been kind enough to agree to make me a vacuum chamber at a huge discount, this is great for the Fusor as it means I’m getting a very customizable chamber at an excellent rate.

The equipment:

I bought the Helium-3 tube of an American seller (cgroat3573) who sells them from time to time.  Two friends of mine got their tube off him and he’s excellent to deal with, so if you’re ever looking for a helium 3 tube, keep an eye on his account.

Helium-3 tubes are used for neutron detection, which is crucial for proving fusion, especially in the Fusor as protons are the only other things that can be detected and require much more expensive equipment.

The leak valve was also bought from Ebay.  It is an Edwards LB10A and will be used in the deuterium line to control the amount entering the chamber.

Finally, the proton exchange membrane cell (PEM cell):  I plan to have the option of producing deuterium through electrolysis of deuterium oxide for fueling the Fusor.  I will be buying pure deuterium too, but I would like to have both options present.  The PEM cell was bought from Ebay too.

There are more parts on the way, so pictures will come as they arrive.  Also, I will be pitching at NUI Galway College Bar this Thursday (24th July) at the Galway Meetup event.  Tickets are, unfortunately, sold out, but if anyone  reading this will be attending, I’ll see you there!

Finally, my cousin is a member of Deaf Weekend, who just released a new song.  Here’s the video:
